Back in the early 80s, I played saxophone in the concert and marching bands. I stuck with it to get to the good stuff, which was jazz band. As square as the edges were, it was more my speed, and closer to stuff I actually listened to than, say, Sousa marches. I held down the low end of the saxophone line on baritone saxophone.

So, I was really surprised last summer when my kid asked about switching from clarinet (where he’s been making tremendous strides) over to saxophone. Ultimately, he wanted to play bari sax in the jazz band. I didn’t prompt him and I’m not sure he knew my history when he started it. Interesting how things cycle.

Anyhow, Saturday night was my first chance to see him playing bari sax in the jazz band, and it was great. I recorded 3 of the songs – the third song actually features him playing the Jaws-like hook!
